Div 1 St. Josephs 1-14, Dundalk Gaels 0-9.

The Joes made it four from four when they overcame the Gaels in the Ramparts on Saturday night. The Gaels game plan was severely disrupted with the loss of both centre forward Michael Quinlivan and centre back James O’Connell early in the first half. Tom O’Connell who top scored for the Gaels opened the scoring with a fisted point. Alan Quigley equalised for the Joes with Jack Mullen restoring the lead for the Gaels. The Joes then hit four in a row from Conor Neary, Conall Smyth, Craig Doherty and Oisin Reidy to put the Joes 0-5 to 0-2 ahead at the end of the first quarter.

The early part of the second quarter saw the Joes continue their run of scores with Oisin McGuinness, Conall Smyth (2) and Craig Doherty extending the Joes lead, 0-9 to 0-2. The Joes defence made it difficult for the Gaels with excellent turnovers from Cian Sheridan and Rian Devlin. On 24mins the Gaels got the scoreboard moving again with a pointed free from Tom O’Connell quickly followed by two from play from O’Connell and Luke Murray to narrow the gap to four points. On 30mins a sweeping move upfield by the Joes was collected by Jack Mulligan and he made no mistake for the only goal of the game. A Conall Smyth point in added time left the half time score, Joes 1-10, Gaels 0-5.

The second half was a very evenly balanced affair with four points each. The Gaels did have their chances with the Joes defence called into action, with Aidan Kieran, Cian Sheridan and Rian Devlin making important goalmouth clearances for the Joes. Points from Oisin McGuinness and Adam Dullaghan for the Joes and a Tom O’Connell free for the Gaels left the score at 1-12 to 0-6 at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter the Gaels saw a number of chances drift wide of the post while the Joes keeper Shane Barron made an excellent save on 46mins. The Gaels hit three points from Tom O’Connell with a two pointer free and one from play. The Joes added to their tally with points from Oisin Reidy on 57mins and Ben Collier finishing off a fine move in the final minute of normal time, Joes 1-14, Gaels 0-9.

St. Josephs: Shane Barron, Cian Sheridan, Aidan Kieran, Rian Devlin, Conor Neary (0-1), Gabriel Bell, David Kieran, Oisin McGuinness (0-2), Oisin Reidy (0-2), Ben Collier (0-1), Craig Doherty (0-2), Alan Quigley (0-1), Conall Smyth (0-4), Jack Mulligan (1-0), Adam Dullaghan (0-1), Aaron Gray.

About the Joes

Naomh Seosamh CLG was formed in 1961 with the amalgamation of the Dromiskin Unknowns and the Darver Volunteers to provide one club to represent the whole parish. The first major success for the club was winning the 1971 Junior Championship and many years of hard work came to fruition in 1996 when we won our first Senior Championship. There have been many other notable successes over the years, not least a second SFC in 2006.

In 2019 we formed a new Ladies football club under the “OneClub” initiative of the GAA and LGFA.

We are a club with a proud tradition and hope for many more years of success!
