Joes qualify for Paddy Sheelan Cup Final
St. Joseph’s 0-15, Naomh Martin 0-14 after extra time
St. Joseph’s edged a tightly contested Paddy Sheelan Cup semi-final in Monasterboice to qualify for a second consecutive final following a 0-15 to 0-14 victory of Naomh Martin. The teams served up an entertaining game in what were particularly cold conditions and a challenging wind that favoured the team defending the road goal.
The Joes opened the scoring in the 3rd. minute from an Alan Quigley 20m free following the home side been penalised for breach of the three forward rule. The Martins took the lead following points from Enda McDonnell on 6mins and the ever dangerous Tom Gray on 11mins. On 12mins Martins keeper Darren Morgan reacted quickest to deny the Joes an opening goal, the follow-up shot coming off the right upright and going wide on the left. Jack Mulligan equalised for the Joes on 13mins following a well timed pass from Craig Doherty. Adam Callanan pointed a minute later for the Martins with Joes keeper Adam Cassidy pulling off an excellent one on one save to leave the Martins leading by 0-3 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter.
On 19mins Craig Callanan side stepped inside to split the uprights for a two point lead for the Martins. Adam Cassidy in the Joes goal was again called into action as he punched clear under pressure., while at the opposite end the Joes had a green flag chalked off for a square infringement. The Joes continued to create chances with Ben Collier firing over and a Killian Staunton through ball was deflected out for a 45. Tom Grey extended the Martins lead with a fine score from wide right on 28mins. The Joes finished the half strongly with two points in the last minute, Jack Mulligan pointing and Rory McLoughlin fielding the kick out to find Conall Smyth who fired over a superb point from wide left. Half time St. Joseph’s 0-5, Naomh Martin 0-5
The sides exchanged points in the first minutes of the second half, Adam Callanan for the Martins and Jack Mulligan finishing off a well worked move following a pass from Alan McKenna. A Martins point on 35mins had the lead out to two points, minutes later in a goalmouth scramble an Alan McKenna shot was deflected out for a Joes 45. Three points in a row from the boot of Alan Quigley, a right footed effort on 38mins followed by two pointed frees, the second, a brilliant score from wide right in the difficult windy conditions put the Joes into a two point lead, 0-9 to 0-7 at the end of the third quarter.
With the Joes down to 14 following a black card, both sides defended well, Michael Staunton with a timely block to end a dangerous Martins attach. On 22mins Craig Doherty stretched the Joes leading by to three on 52mins. With both sides off target with a number of efforts, it was the Martins who hit the first two pointer from Tom Grey on 55mins and a minute later the Martins found the equalising point and the final score of normal time, the sides finishing level at 0-10 each.
In the first period of extra time the sides exchanged points with Alan Quigley pointing a 35m free for the Joes. Two quick fire points from Alan Quigley and a monster effort from the left by Craig Doherty put the Joes into a 0-13 to 0-11 lead at the break.
The Martins powered back in the second period with a two pointer and a point to lead by one with just five minutes left on the clock. The Joes drawing level from a Ben Collier 20m free. The Joes regained the lead with two minutes left, when Ben Collier was fouled on his way through, Collier pointing the resultant 13m free. The match could have gone either way in the final minutes with both sides failing to convert their chances and it was the Joes who held on to win by the narrowest of margins 0-15 to 0-14.
