U16s Add More Success to the Week

08 Oct 2009

In what was already a great week for the Joes, the U16s took to the field in a floodlit  Darver tonight, looking for the clubs second success in five days! Standing in their way was an Oliver Plunketts side that had beaten them by three points in a ten goal thriller at the start of the season. Five of the starting Joes team had already tasted success as members of the minor squad and it was hoped that they would have the appetite for more. Conditions under foot were tough with it being a cold night and a greasy surface.

The Joes took no time to settle, with a Daire Smith free being played into Gareth Yore, who popped it straight over. Smith was again involved minutes later, when he collected a ball on the 21 himself and also got on to the score sheet. He soon doubled his tally, with a free from the left, after Yore had been fouled. With ten minutes gone, the Joes had there first goal chance, when a Liam O Leary shot was well saved. The Plunketts did get off the mark themselves  with 12 minutes gone with a pointed free. The Joes restored their three point lead within a minute, when Yore set up Lannigan, whos low shot flew over the bar. With 15 minutes gone the Plunketts were again on the mark with a very impressive 50 from their centre half back.

The Joes had very much had the most of the play in the first quarter, but this was all to count for little after 18 minutes, when steady build up play from midfield lead to goal chance for the Plunketts, which they duly took. The Joes did level the scores, when despite being on the ground, O Leary still managed to find Yore with his pass, who took his point. However, direct from this kickout, the Plunketts worked the ball straight down the field and Maguire had to be alert in the Joes goal to push the resultant shot over the bar. O Leary was again on hand to set up the next Joes score, this time linking up with Jack Mulligan, who took a good point. With practically the last kick of the half, the Drogheda outfit again gained the lead, with a second excellent 50 yard free from their centre half.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-6, Oliver Plunketts 1-4

The Joes came out in the second half and showed real intent. The first score of the half came courtesy of a Jack Mulligan free kick, after Liam O Leary had been fouled. This was followed up by an inspirational score by Dean Matthews, raiding from the back. The next score was also an excellent point, though very different from the previous one. This move was started by excellent work by Dean Berills in his own defence and finished in the attack by the player who had started in the other corner back spot, but was now playing the forwards, Cillian Barrett. Jack Mulligan further extended his personally tally with the next point of the game, this one from play. Mulligan was again on hand for the next score, this time setting up Yore, whos shot was blocked over the bar.

Going into the third quarter the Joes had built up a four point lead. They pushed this out further in a move that was started by Nicholas Morgan at full back, he drove out and the ball was played to Dean Matthews on the left, who dribbled the ball soccer style for a good twenty yards through the Plunketts defence, before setting up Jake Keenan for a point. Nearly straight from the kickout the ball finished up back with Kennan, giving him a goal chance, which was unfortunately just wide of the target. Kennan was very bright in this period, because again, within a minute he was involved in setting up O Leary for a goal chance, which was also stopped. A rare Plunketts attack in the 19th minute saw them get their only point of the half, when their forty yards man pointed from play. This was soon cancelled out when Matthews played a long free into Yore in the square, who broke the ball down to O Leary, for him to get a much deserved point. Matthews got the next point from play, this one coming off the post and cross bar, reminiscent to a certain Quigers point last Sunday! With 27 minutes gone O Leary played a good ball into Yore and with him bearing down on goal, he was tripped inside the 21, Daire Smith pointed the resultant free. The last score of the game came when Ciaran Lannigan was fouled a full 40 yards out from goal, Jack Mulligan stepped up to nail the free over the bar and bring his personal tally to four points.
Full Time Score: St Josephs 0-16, Oliver Plunketts 1-5

This is a team who have struggled to field teams during the year and are sat in between two strong sides, both above and below them. That is what makes this B championship shield final victory all the more worthwhile, it has been tough year for this bunch of lads and their management and it is great to see them get some success at the end of it. Well done to all involved and thanks for bringing more success to the club.
