U13s Win All County Div 2A League Final

26 Aug 2009

The scoreline does not do justice to the closeness of a game that could have gone either way. After a nervous start it was the Joes Dean Matthews who struck the first point of the game after 5 minutes and quickly added a second within the minute. From the kick out Craig Doherty won possession and in a quick interchange Dean Matthews cut through the Mitchells defence to crash the ball to the net. A further three points from Matthews from a free, a sideline and from open play gave the Joes a 1-5 lead. The Mitchells struggled to keep with the Joes and it was goalkeeper David Anderson who kept them in the game with a great save from Kieran Mulligan. Joes added points from Mulligan & Matthews to give them a 10 point lead.

The Mitchells changed their midfield and moved their no. 10 into the full forward line. Immediately the moves paid off and their centre back scored a fine point and suddenly the Mitchells were dominating play. In the five minutes before half time Kevin Gallagher dominated in midfield and the Mitchells broke through for a fine goal followed by a point. Then the Mitchells were denied firstly by the upright and then by the cross bar and were unlucky to go in at half time trailing by 1-7 to 1-2.

The Mitchells started the second half in blistering fashion with a great long range point from Kevin Gallagher and two further points in the first four minutes to leave the sides level at Joes 1-7 to Mitchells 2-4. In the next five minutes Anderson saved again and the Mitchells shot four wides but were unable to get that all important score that would give them the lead. Following another good save from Anderson in the Mitchell’s goal Joes finally got off the mark to retake the lead when Aaron Carolan struck over a great point in the 10 minute.

The turning point of the game came in the 13 min when the Joes goalkeeper Jordon Mackin made a great save and from the resultant clearance by Andrew Kieran the ball was moved swiftly up field and Dean Matthews was on hand to rifle the ball to the net. In the 15 min the teams exchanged points with Gallagher for the Mitchells & Craig Doherty for the Joes to leave the Joes leading by 2-9 to 2-5. The Joes playing some fine passing football added four more points Dean Matthews (2) and Adam Carolan (2) before Dean Matthews capped a fine display with his third goal. It was Kevin Gallagher who scored the final point of the game for the Mitchells leaving Joes 3-13 to 2-6 winners against a young and gallant Mitchells team.

In a fine all round team performance the Joes had great performances from Andrew Kieran at full back who fielded many high balls and was ably assisted by Ryan Dempsey whose many timely interceptions kept the Joes in the game when under pressure. In the half back line Conor McQuillan kept the Joes in the game when the Mitchells were dominant. In Dean Matthews, in midfield and then in the forwards in the second half, the Joes had man of the match with a majestic display of high fielding and scorer of 3-8.

His midfield partner Ciaran Gallagher performed a great marking role in midfield & defence cutting out many dangerous attacks. Craig Doherty had a pivotal display at left half forward throughout linking well with defence and attack, in particular the second half when he led the way for the Joes. In attack the Joes had other fine performances from Adam Carolan, Kieran Mulligan & Aaron Carolan.

On behalf of the Joes it was captain Conor McQuillan, who received the cup to the applause of Joes team, mentors & supporters. Compliments to the Mitchells, whose team & supporters who were also present for the presentation of the cup.
