Damien Reid All Star Challenge ***UPDATED***

22 Aug 2009

Cluskey Park, was the venue for the Damien Reid All Star Challenge and a packed evening of GAA activity. The evening commenced at 5pm, with Under 10 and Under 12 Exhibition games featuring representatives from each of the clubs in the county.

At Seven the big game threw in, with the Louth Heros of the 90s facing an All Star selection from the Rest of Ireland. There was a terrific turn out of players from Louth and many more counties for this charity game. The All Stars held the upper hand early on and it was only in the closing stages that Louth managed to close the gap and with the final kick of the game Stefan White converted a definite penalty to level the game. Referee Gabriel McKenney immediately blew the long whistle and captains Seamus O Hanlon and Leo Turley came forward to jointly receive the winning trophy. The game itself was played in great spirit and both sides proved that despite the years, none of the players had lost their touch (class is permanent). Towards the end the Louth substitute benches were emptied as every player gave a hand out on the field of play! Louths goals came from Nicholas Browne, Colin Kelly, Aaron Hoey and Stefan White while John "Shorty" Traynor, John McDermott and Johnny McDonnell found the net for the visitors. The Joes were proudly represented on the field of play by Ollie Mc Donnell (nice change these days for Ollie to be one of the youngest players on the field), John Fox (Lyons was apparently going to tog out, until he heard that Foxy was on the squad) and David Mulligan (who should have been lined out against Turley for old times sakes).

At half time there was an U8 game between St. Josephs and Mattock Rangers. After the game there were a few words from Paddy Oliver (Chairman Louth Senior Board), Brendan Carthy (Chairman Louth Minor Board) and Sean Reid spoke on behalf o the Reid family. Jim Mc Donnell presented Colin Kelly with the Man of the Match prize, a suit voucher. Commentary on the game was provided by our own Gerry Kinahan, with accompaniment from Sean Kinahan! Following this, youngsters had an opportunity to meet with the stars and there followed an evenings entertainment in the community centre, with Roy Taylor providing the music. There was also an auction carried out by Donal Brady with some keenly contested items on show. In addition to this there was a draw for two All Ireland Tickets. All proceeds from the event were in aid of Louth GAA Underage Development, it was estimated that a figure in the region of €20,000 was raised.
