Oisin Takes on Cluskey Park like it was Tir na nOg

22 Aug 2017

Flying high at the top of the division five league, our juniors hosted the Wolfe Tones on Tuesday evening, hoping to keep their momentum going and clinch the league title. With the Fechins level on points another win was important, as slip ups could not be afforded.  On this evening there was none, as our men ran out convincing winners. Holding the visitors scoreless in the first half, while we racked up 1-7. All but one point coming from play and 1-4 of it coming from the boot of Oisin Mc Guinness. It was the younger of the Mc Guinness brothers who opened the scoring and his goal came on the 10 minute mark, with a great ball in from Killian Staunton finding him close to goal, he calmly rounded the keeper and finished to the empty net. The other points before this coming from the aforementioned Staunton, Alan Mc Kenna and Cian Mc Guinness. The last 20 minutes of the half were a dull enough affair, but Mc Guinness added another three points, only the last one coming from a dead ball.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 1-7, Wolfe Tones 0-0

Things did not get much better for the Drogheda side in the second half. Mc Guinness started where he left off with a pointed free. Niall Smith did get the Tones first score with a point from play, this was followed by one from John Kelly. But in between a long ball from David Kieran was expertly fielded by Mc Guinness and despatched to the net. The young Oisin completed his hatrick in the 12th minute and at this stage the Joes were already 16 points clear and the game was up. The Tones were awarded a penalty with 14 minutes to go, but even this was not to benefit them, as Aidan Shaw saved the spot kick. The Joes cruised home from here, but the biggest cheer of the evening came for the final score. After a lung bursting length of the field run Stefan Pots got on the end of a move and finished to the bottom corner of the net.
