League Promotion Chances Get the Black Card

04 Sep 2016

The division one league promotion play off final against the Clans took place at high noon today in Haggardstown. The omens for the Joes were not good from the start, losing captain Daire Smyth to an injury in the warm up. This might have been a sign of things to come, as by half time there were a further three keys players lost to black cards!

Playing into the road end goal, it was the Clans who got off the mark first with a Billy Smith point, which Alan Quigley followed up with a fifty for the Joes. It was shortly after this that the Joes lost the first of their players to a black card, with Derek Mulligan going in the ninth minute. A Robbie Curran free was again cancelled out by an immediate response from Conal O Hanlon. Shortly after this the Joes suffered their second black card casualty, with Mark Neary being dismissed and conceding a penalty. His replacement Eamonn Nearys first touch of the ball came when he picked the ball out of the net, as he had no chance of stopping Smiths penalty, which was clinically dispatched to the bottom corner.

After this the game settled briefly back into its normal rhythm, the Clans pointed and the Joes responded. On this occasion it was JJ Quigley and Tomas Smyth trading the scores. But the last eight minutes of the half would be distinctly Clans dominated, stretching out their lead from just one score, hitting three of the four points that came at in the closing minutes of the period. The Joes also lost their third man to a black card, this time it was midfielder Tomas Smyth.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-4, Clan na Gael 1-6

The half time break gave the depleted Joes outfit a chance to regather themselves and they were the ones who dominated the third quarter. Right from the throw in they worked a scoring chance, which was finished by Quigley. He followed this up with a free and Alan Lynch and Conall Smyth also got in on the act, while the solitary score from the Clans in this quarter came from Ola Olajabu. Indeed, if the Joes had not been so erratic in front of goals they could well have been level at this point. However, as it would turn out, they did not score for the remainder of the game and Clans stretched their two point lead out to a comprehensive and deserving eight.
Full Time Score: St Josephs 0-8, Clan na Gael 1-13
