Juniors Clean Out Clans in Second Half

27 May 2014

The Junior team hosted the Clans on Tuesday evening in the league. Both sides have been among the top junior sides in the county over the last few years and are very well familiar with each other and both sides fielded strong teams this evening. On a perfect early summers evening for football, the Joes played with the aid of a slight breeze that was blowing into the railway end in the first half.

Cian Smyth got the Joes off to a good start with a point within the opening minute, but the Clans were quick to respond. A Billy Smith shot for goal was well saved, but Paul Martin was on hand to pick up the rebound and hit to the net. A Drew Duffy free put the town side into a three point lead with five minutes played. The Joes hit back with three fine points in as many minutes to level the scores at the ten minutes mark. The score coming from Jack Mulligan, Alan Quigley and John Mc Guinness. The game then went nearly ten minutes without a score before Cian Smyth flicked the ball off the top of the crossbar and over. Martin and Quigley then traded points before two Drew Duffy points put the Clans back in front by one. The game remained tight for the remaining five minutes of the half, another Cian Smyth point came in between points from Martin and Smith at the other end. But two points from Quigley at the end of the half levelled the scores for the fifth time in the half.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-9, Clan na Gael 1-6

The second half was a very different affair, with the Joes going on to completely dominate, thanks mainly to some resolute defending. Frees from Gary Kinahan and Quigley put the Joes into a two point lead before Mc Guinness got the first score from play in the half. The Joes continued to dominate, but missed chances meant the difference between the sides remained at two entering the final quarter. The decisive scoring burst was kicked off by another Quigley free, before one from play for Daire Smyth. With ten minutes of normal time remaining a move started by a lovely Mark Gorham interception in defence was well worked the length of the field before being finished to the net by Lorcan Doyle. This was soon followed by the Clans only point of the half, but the Joes remained seven clear until the closing minutes, when Rory Campbell was taken down for a penalty, which was duly converted by Gorham. Top scorer Quigley rounded off the scoring for a comprehensive win.
