Minors Beat Cooley in Division 2 League

19 May 2014

The minor teams from Cooley and St. Josephs served up a thriller in Cluskey Park in a high scoring game that was in the balance right to the final whistle. The home team settled quickly with Killian Staunton winning the midfield exchanges for the Joes, setting up the inside forwards with early goal scoring opportunities that narrowly missed the target. However it was Cooley who landed the early scores, it was midway through the opening half before the Joes made the most of their territorial advantage scoring a goal and a point to get back into the game. The Joes continued their fine play shooting 1-3 without reply to take a lead of 2-4 to 1-3 with five minutes to go to the break. Cooley upped their attack and despite some desperate defending from the Joes defence it was Cooley who finished the half strongly, scoring 1-2 to retake the lead and leave the minimum between them at half time.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 2-4, Cooley Kickhams 2-5

The Joes started the second half with a well worked goal from Killian Staunton and well taken points from Stephen Carron and Dean Matthews sent them into an eight point lead. However Cooley were not finished yet, taking control at midfield and with eight minutes left the Joes emptied the bench and juggled the team to try and see the game out.  However it was to be a very nervy last few minutes for the home side with Cooley striking a fine goal before adding some excellent points to take the match back to a three point game. Some excellent defence from the Joes kept their lead at three points deep into the 6 minutes of added time when a close in free for Cooley ended with a point leaving the Joes narrow two point winners in a very exciting game.
Full Time Score: St. Josephs 4-12, Cooley Kickhams 3-13

St. Josephs scorers:  Stephen Carron (0-4), Adam O Connor (1-0), Andrew Kierans (1-0), Killian Staunton (1-2),  Dean Matthews (0-2), Craig Doherty (1-3), Shane McQuillan (0-1). This was fine team performance in a very competitive match giving the Joes a second win before the exam break.
