Juniors Lose Out to the Champs!

29 Apr 2014

The division 4A league champions of the last two years met in Cluskey Park on Tuesday evening. Despite them being arguably the best junior two teams of the past couple of years, they both served up a game that was well below both of their bests. Having said that, the Pats were the better side throughout and lead from start to finish!

The visitors started the game playing into the wind coming from the road end, but this did not stop them racking up a crucial 1-2 to no score advantage in the opening ten minutes. The goal coming from wing back Sean Mc Geough. The Joes nearly struck back with a major, but uncharacteristically Lorcan Doyle cracked his shot off the crossbar. Mark Gorham opened the scoring for the home side, this was quickly followed by a Colm Mc Cann free, but this was met with a good reply from Jack Mulligan. Conor Grogan restored the Pats five point advantage with ten minutes left in the half. But the Joes rallied and a brace from Jack Mulligan, followed by another from Gorham reduced the deficit. The best Joes score of the half came in injury time, with good team work getting the ball to Rory Campbell, who finished well and left just the minimum between the sides at the break.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-6, St Patricks 1-4

The Pats started the second half in a lively manner and hit three points from play in the opening five minutes. Lorcan Doyle tagged one back for the Joes, but the Pats added on a further two, before Jack Mulligan hit a boomer in the 20th minute. The Pats again replied with a brace to extend their lead to six with as many minutes of normal time left. Although the Joes pegged two back in these remaining minutes, it was still a relatively comfortable win for the peninsula men.
