Juniors Lose Out to Injury Time Goal

22 Apr 2014

The second round of the division 4A league saw the Joes play their first game in the competition, away to the Marys on a dark Ardee evening.

The first half was a tit for tat affair, with never more than two points between the sides and seeing them level on no fewer than six occasions. Midfielder Paul Malone opened the scoring for the men in blue. But minutes later the Joes got the perfect chance to open with a major, when a John Mc Guinness shot was foot blocked and a penalty awarded. Lorcan Doyle was inches from hitting a perfect penalty, but his shot came off the butt of the post and was cleared. It took nearly 15 minutes for the next score of the game to come, when a short free to the veteran Mark Gorham saw him characteristically strike over. Shane Mc Coy hit a 50 yard free for the Marys with Lorcan Doyle hitting an immediate response at the far end. The teams traded the next four points, before Mc Coy again drove over and his midfield partner Malone followed up minutes later. The Joes levelled the game in the closing minutes of the half with points from Cian Smyth and Gorham.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-6, St Marys 0-6

A Doyle free after a minute of the resumption had the Joes in front for the first time in the game and this was followed by another Joes free, this one from the boot of Jack Mulligan. The Marys responded and had the game level by the tenth minute. John Mc Guinness gave the Joes a four point lead with 1-1 in the space of a few minutes to stretch the game for the first time. The goal coming when a Peter Brennan pile driver was saved, Mc Guinness was there to pick up the pieces and hit his shot through a maze of players to the net. The home side tagged back two points, before a length of the pitch move saw Jack Mulligans powerful shot saved at the expense of a fifty. Alan Lynch confidently struck over the resultant dead ball kick and when the home side lost their centre half to a second yellow card in the 27th minute the Joes held a three point lead and a one man advantage. Another Marys point was responded to by Mulligan to restore the three point lead heading into injury time. But a final point was followed up with a rare 32nd minute Paul Malone goal. When referee Paddy Matthews blew up from the kickout the Joes were left to rue their missed chances and the late concession of a crucial goal, while the Marys could thank their midfield pairing for driving their team to the win, with a total scoring tally of 1-6 between them.
