Intermediate League Final Round Match Report

13 Oct 2013

The last round of the division two intermediate league saw the Joes travel to near neighbours the Geraldines on Sunday afternoon. With the Joes already qualified for the knockout stages the game was of no consequence to them, but a win for the home team and a loss for the Marys would see the Haggardstown outfit win the league outright.

It took the Joes less than a minute open the scoring with an Alan Quigley point. However, this would be their only score for more than ten minutes, during which time the Geraldines hit 2-3 without reply to give them a commanding early lead. A Conal O Hanlon free reduced the deficit to seven points. The teams traded three points a piece during the second quarter of the match to leave that same gap between them at the break.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-5, Geraldines 2-6

As at the start of the first half, Quigley opened the scoring with an early point. However, this time it would be Joes who would go on a scoring run, this being the first of six unanswered points to leave just the minimum between the sides with 12 minutes played in the half. But just as the Joes looked like getting back level Michael Rogers hit the home teams first point of the half. A Derek Mulligan response off the left boot brought the margin back down to one going into the final quarter. The Gers hit another scoring purple patch between the 19th and 25th minute, when they hit 1-3 without reply to regain their seven point lead with only five minutes of normal time remaining. The Joes did push on to the end though and hit back with a Peter Mulligan point and a Conal O Hanlon goal, before Daragh Hamill hit the Geraldines final point in the 29th minute to stretch their lead out to four points. A Robert Sansom goal in the final minute of normal time left for a tense injury time, but the Joes just could not conjure up the equaliser.
