Juniors Exit Championship at First Hurdle

29 Aug 2013

Despite being one of the very best junior league teams in the county for the last three years, it has been many years since the Joes juniors have recorded a win in the junior championship. There task was not made any easier this evening when they faced their keen rivals Clan na Gael in Cluskey Park.

The Joes started brightly and lead by 3 points to 1 after five minutes. Alan Lynch opening the scoring from play, before Gary Kinahan struck over two frees, with the Clans opener coming from a Stephen Hutchinson dead ball. However, this would be as good as it got for the Joes in the half, with Hutchinson leading the drive for the town team from the middle. Another Hutchinson free and one from play for the midfielder had the scores level by the ten minute mark. Declan Moran, Hutchinson (2) and Gavin Gaffney left them in a four point lead as the half came towards a close. It could have been more if it was not for a good save from Eamonn Neary in the Joes goal, but with the ball not cleared Aidan Mc Cabe picked up the pieces and pushed the lead out to five. An Alan Lynch free from nearly fifty yards, as the game ticked into injury time, meant the Clans went in leading by double scores at the break.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-4, Clan na Gael 0-8

A close in Aidan Mc Cabe free restored the five point gap shortly after the restart, before fine fielding from Tommy Yore started a move that was finished by Jack Mac Namee from distance. Hutchinson and Kinahan traded frees, but when Kinahan fed Craig Doherty for a point from the kick out of the previous Joes point there was a much needed bit of impetus put into the Joes play. With Jonny Mc Gailey escorting a good long ball into Daire Mc Kiernan in the Clans defence, the subsequent foul and Kinahan free left only two between the sides with 12 minutes of normal time remaining. But the Clans were quick to take control of the game again and a Gavin Gaffney point and two more Hutchinson frees put them five clear again with as many minutes of normal time remaining. The win was sealed within seconds of the last of these frees, when Polish import Gladys Voycheck hit to the net. A further free from Hutchinson and another from play for Gaffney rounded off the scoring in what turned into a comprehensive win for the town team.
