Minors Exit Championship at First Hurdle

28 Aug 2013

The Joes first game in this years minor championship saw them travel to Ballygassan to face the combined sides of Naomh Fionbarra and St Kevins. It was a perfect late summers evening for football with the Joes playing into the club house end in the first half.

The Joes opened brightly winning the throw in and Craig Doherty driving through the middle for the opening score of the game. However, this would turn out to be the only time in the game that they would lead. Conor Mc Quillan was called on to make a fine save from a goal shot in the fifth minute, but the home side would not be denied minutes later, as their corner forward bagged two goals within the space of a minute. The combination side added two pointed frees to their tally either side of back to back points from Dean Matthews and Craig Doherty. The teams continued to trade points as two points from Steven Carron came either side of a pair for the home team. But as the half edged on the combination team pushed their lead out further with another goal and point coming either side of points for Doherty and Killian Staunton to leave the Joes trailing by double scores at the break.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-7, Naomh Fionbarra/St Kevins 3-5

As in the first half, the Joes got the first point from the boot of Craig Doherty. This however would be their only score of the half, as they made several efforts to claw the game back with efforts at goal, but none of them coming off. The Barrs/Kevins added a further 1-4 to their tally to run out comfortable and deserving winners in the end.
