Tense Top of the Table Clash for U12s

22 Aug 2013

Going into the final game of the League tied on equal points these two sides served up a thrilling game ending in a high scoring draw. The Joes opened the scoring when Oran McParland struck an excellent point from out on the right. Kilkerley knocked over two long range efforts before Conal McCaul broke through the centre to crash the ball to the net for the Joes opening goal. A point from a free for Kilkerley left them within a point after just five minutes of play. A second Joes goal from Conal McCaul was quickly cancelled out by a superbly placed shot by Michael Begley to the corner of the Joes net.

Josh Mackin then setup Jack Barron to score a fine point for the Joes. With Kilkerley controlling the midfield exchanges they created a number of fine scoring chances to score a further 1-2. Excellent work by the Joes defence of Conor Casey, Aaron Neary, Michael Staunton and Andrew McDonnell helped lift the siege and it was Conal McCaul who brought the Joes back into the game with a goal from a close range effort to level the scores. A point by Kevin Campbell had the Joes back in the lead with Kilkerley equalising before the break to leave the score Kilkerley 2-6, St. Josephs 3-3.

The second half saw the Joes start brightly with a string of excellent points from Ben Collier (2), Jack Barron, Kevin Campbell and Conal McCaul. Kilkerley responded with two points and Josh Mackin in the Joes goal had to be alert to keep out a number of efforts. Jack Barron pointed from a free for the Joes before a well worked Kilkerley move ended with an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net to leave just two points between the sides. Jack Barron extended the Joes lead to three with five minutes remaining. From there to the end Kilkerley dominated the attack with three points to leave the sides level at the final whistle at 3-11 each.

The Joes had fine performances throughout the team with Conor Casey making his debut at this level, Jack Barron led the attack in one of his best games for the Joes. However on the night, the Joes man of the match was Conal McCaul who led by example all through the match.
