Intermediate League Match Report against Mochtas

02 Jul 2013

What a difference a round of games can make! After dishing out a big beating in Tallanstown two weeks ago the Joes made the trip a few miles up the road to Louth village on a dark and damp Tuesday evening. With the Mochtas only points in the league so far being against the relegation stricken Malachis, the Joes were the form team going into this match. But the tables were completely turned as the home side dished it out in the second half.

Playing into the road end in the first half, it was the Joes who struck first with a good opener from Jack Mulligan. The home side were not long to follow up with Andrew English coming forward up the left wing to hit their opener. There was an immediate response at the other end as Gary Kinahan set up Peter Mulligan for a straight forward score. Two frees from former county player Declan Byrne had the Mochtas back in front a quarter of the way through the contest. In an action packed couple of minutes, current county star, Casey Byrne struck a great individual goal, as he drove unchallenged up the left wing. This was soon cancelled out though, as John Mc Guinness punched a ball into the path of Jack Mulligan, who still had a bit to do before striking a great shot to the back of the net. The Joes suffered the first of their losses to injury at this point as David Reilly had to come off. Ciaran Byrne, Derk Mulligan, Liam Mc Granaghan and Gary Kinahan then all traded points from play, before a Kinahan free levelled up matters with 26 minutes played. A Casey Byrne skyscraper was followed by an Alan Quigley free from the right corner to keep the scores level as the half entered injury time. But slack Joes defending assisted Eoin O Neill, as he hit over two points before the small whistle to put the home side ahead at the break.

Half Time Score: St Josephs 1-6, St Mochtas 1-8

The home side were first out of the dressing room after the break and were not long about getting a run going on the scoreboard when the game restarted. Quick ball into Casey Byrne gave him the platform to set up Liam Mc Granagh for a point within the opening seconds. Byrne then hit one over himself to extend the lead to four points. The next big action of the game came in the form of a big clash. As Ben Mulligan collected a short free and tried to come up along the line, Declan Byrne met him with a crunching shoulder. Unfortunately for both parties there was an accidental clash of heads which necessitated both players to come off and have their head wounds tend to. Ben Mulligan would play no further part, but Byrne would return five minutes later, although he was repeatedly sent to the line to have his wound tended to, meaning that Byrne and Ken Meegan were like two roll on, roll off players for most of the half!

When the play did resume the Joes saw a goal chance go a begging, before O Neill doubled his personal tally with one from play and one from a free. A further Declan Byrne free followed before his brother Ciaran was awarded a penalty. The former was the one who stepped up to take the kick, but as he had done a fortnight earlier, Robbie Arthur was equal to the effort, saved and cleared his lines. This seemed to give the Joes some desperately needed inspiration and their first score of the half came shortly afterwards from Peter Mulligan. This was followed by a Derek Mulligan point from the kick out, to leave five between the sides with ten minutes to play and a glimmer of hope for the Joes. But this would be the last of their scores as the Mochtas hit an unanswered five points over the closing stages to complete the rout. Three further frees from Declan Byrne were accompanied by points from play for his brother Ciaran and Andrew English wrapped up the Mochtas scoring in the game, just as he had opened it.
