U12s Win Tight Affair over Gaels

21 Jun 2013

Dundalk Gaels opened the scoring with a point but the Joes then settled and Conal McCaul tied the scores with a fine point. With the Joes dominating the midfield exchanges it was Josh Mackin with a point from the right wing, then Gabriel Bell with another from the left before Jack Barron got on the score sheet with two excellent points to put Joes ahead by five to one midway through the half. The Joes were excellent in defence during this period with Ciaran Johnston and Michael Staunton outstanding. Josh Mackin with a 45 and another Jack Barron point had the Joes ahead by six before the Gaels combined well to score a great goal and then added two points to get within a point of the Joes. The Joes finished the half with a long range Josh Mackin point to leave the Joes ahead by 0-8 to 1-3 at the break.

The Gaels opened the half with a goal to go into the lead before the Joes equalised with a point from Jack Barron. Further points from Gabriel Bell (two) and another from the boot of Barron stretched the Joes lead to three points. It was short lived as the Gaels cut through for a goal to equalise and then take the lead with an excellent point. Josh Mackin tied the scores at Joes 0-13 to Gaels 3-4 before the Gaels took the Joes defence apart with well worked team play scoring 1-3 without reply.
With less than 10 mins left the Joes lifted their game with Ciaran Johnston carrying the ball from defence to setup Josh Mackin for a goal followed by a second in a goal mouth scramble to leave the sides level at 2-13 to 4-7. With the game swinging from end to end the Gaels responded with two points before the Joes laid siege to the Gaels goal with the Joes man of the match Gabriel Bell forcing the ball to the net to put the Joes back into the lead. With minutes remaining the Joes were ahead by four when Conal McCaul fisted a dropping ball to the net. There was drama to the end, in the last minute with the Gaels through on goal, the ball skimmed the cross bar leaving the Joes narrow winners in a very exciting game.
