Juniors Reel in Cloghermen for Late Catch!

28 May 2013

After losing their first league game in just short of a year, the juniors were looking to get back on track with a home tie against the Dreadnots on Tuesday evening. It was a perfect summer evening for football with only a very light breeze.

The first half was a very even affair on the scoreboard, with never anymore than a point between the sides and the teams being level on five ocassions. But this does not tell the full story, as the home side were thankfull for some wastefull shooting from the visitors and a couple of near misses for a goal during the half.

Damien Connor opened the scoring for the Joes after only two minutes, but there was a quick response at the other end when Eamonn Neary had to deflect Conor Murphys goalward shot over the bar. David Reilly was next to strike, but a good score from Ronan Calliff and a further Murphy point had the Clogher men in front for the first. Mickey Mc Ardle and Barry Faulkner traded scores, before a well taken Daire Mc Kiernan point and a Damien Connor fifty had the Joes back in front by the twenty third minute. There would be no more scores in the half, but Sean Molloy did knock a goal effort off the Joes the crossbar and the Joes freakishly lost three players to injury in the last five minutes of the half!

Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-5, Dreadnots 0-4

It was more of the same for most the second half, nothing between the sides on the scoreboard and the Joes being more economical in front of the posts. Daragh Shevlin opened the scoring, before points from Gary Kinahan and Jack Mulligan put a two point gap between the sides for the first time in the game. It was relatively short lived, as a close in Ciaran Cunningham free and a good Sean Molloy point from out in the corner had the game level again with twelve minutes played. Rory Campbell, Ciaran Cunningham, Daragh Shevlin, Craig Doherty, Conor Murphy, Jack Mulligan and Sean Molloy all hit a point a piece to leave the Dreadnots ahead by a point with 28 minutes played. So when Ciaran Cunningham was put through on goal and clinically finised to the Joes net it looked like this close encounter had been blown wide open. Even the most biased cannot claim that the Joes played well in this game, but what they did certainly do was save their best for last. Quick thinking from Shane Mc Quillan saw him play a ball into Gary Kinahan, who had ghosted off his marker. Kinahan shot across the keeper into the bottom corner of the net. The Dreadnots goal had been immediately cancelled out and there was hope that the Joes might get something that they barely deserved out of the game. Mc Quillan and Kinahan were involved again in the next move, as they set up Rory Campbell in front of goals. Substitute Campbell drove over his second score of the game with the very last kick of the match to rescue a dramatic point for the Joes.
