U14 Victorious against neighbours

27 May 2013

In a thrill a minute encounter the Joes came away from Stabannon with a hard earned win in what was a great all round team performance.  Oisin McGuinness led by example from start to finish and he opened the scoring for the Joes with a fine point. The combination side took control and were soon ahead with goals from their scorer in chief John Gallagher and Sean Roddy. The cross bar then saved the Joes twice and Oisin McGuinness kept the Joes in it with three excellent points. The combination team added two points before Ciaran Johnston got through for a Joes goal. An excellent point from out on the right by Lorcan McGeeney for the Joes had the sides level at 2-2 to 1-5 midway through the first half.

The combination side were soon in front with two quick points. The Joes Kevin Campbell  got through for a goal, Oisin McGuinness added a point and Conor Neary set Donal Johnston up for another goal. Then it was danger man John Gallagher who cut through the Joes defence scoring two quick goals to put the combination side ahead by a point. However the Joes finished strongly with three successive points, from the Johnston brothers Donal and Ciaran with Oisin McGuinness finishing the scoring for the Joes leaving the half time score at St. Josephs 3-9 O’Connells/Stabannon/John Mitchells 4-4.

The second half saw the Joes defence of Alex Daries, Paul Coyne and Conor Neary get control of the game and the Joes extended their lead when Ryan Woods burst through for a goal and Lorcan McGeeney pushed forward to score a goal and a point. The combination side were soon back in with an excellent run by Trevor Matthews scoring a point from an acute angle that was quickly followed by 1-2 to leave just three points in it.
Two points from Caolan Conroy and one from Ciaran Johnston put Joes ahead by six before the excellent John Gallagher soloed through from midfield for a goal to cut the margin to three points. Three excellent saves by Shane Barron in the Joes goals kept them ahead in the last 10 mins of the game and three successive points for the Joes from Ciaran Johnston, Kevin Campbell and the excellent Caolan Conroy left the Joes winners in a fantastic game of football that was a credit to both teams.
