Junior Winning Run Comes to an End

21 May 2013

The last time that the Juniors had lost a league game was 355 days ago, but like all good things, the run had to come to an end at some stage. It did this evening, at the hands of one of the other top junior sides in the county.

The Clans got off to a dream start, with their top performers, Mark Newell and Paul Martin hitting a goal and point within the opening three minutes of the game. Damien Connor got the Joes off the mark with a free on the five minute mark, but Martin cancelled this out with a free of his own at the far end. The teams continued to trade points, as an Alan Quigley point was quickly followed by one from Adrian Mc Glynn and when Connor hit over a 50 with ten minutes gone there was just the goal between the sides. Three Newell points doubled the town teams superiority on the score board, before points from Connor, Quigley (2) and Gary Kinahan, had the Joes deficit back to only a goal, with a Micheal Mc Donnell point being the only Clans response in this period. It looked as though they would double their advantage again with only two minutes left in the half, when Martin was awarded a penalty. He stood up to take the kick himself, but Eamonn Neary in the Joes goals got down low to his right and saved well. The ball was worked downfield and Aidan Shaw recovered what appeared to be a hopeless ball and hit over from near the endline. This should have given the Joes a much needed lift, but the Clans were not put off and further points from Newell and Mc Donnell left four between the sides at the break.

Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-8, Clan na Gael 1-9

As in the first half the Clans got the perfect start, with Martin hitting 1-1 in the opening three minutes to leave them leading by double scores. The Joes opened their account with a super point from Jack Mulligan, but again the team failed to be inspired and the Clans replied with another Newell point. When Martin and Newell hit a goal a piece within 60 seconds of each other, mid way through the half the result was sealed. The Clans continued to rack up the points throughout the remainder of the half, as they utterely dominated, with the only other Joes score of the half again coming from the boot of Mulligan right at the death of a disappointing home defeat.
