Three from Three for Junior Team in League

28 Apr 2013

In a nice break from tradition, the county board has scheduled junior league games for mid afternoon on Sunday this year. The first round of these games saw the Joes travel to Beaulieu to take on the Fechins.

The first ten minutes was played in the Joes half, but all the Fechins scoring chances ended up wide, including a goal shot from Harry Mc Carthy. Sean Mc Bride did eventually open the scoring for the home side, this was followed by a good point from corner back Fergal Mc Nally raiding forward. These were the only two scores of the second ten minutes of play, as in the twentieth minute it was the trusty right foot of Gary Kinahan who eventually got the Joes on the scoreboard. Straight from the kickout Rory Campbell fed Aidan Shaw and he took his customary goal with aplomb. Two frees from Gary Kinahan and a Damien Connor point from the right wing and the Joes had completely turned the game around, to lead by five with only two minutes of normal time remaining in the half. The response from the Fechins was swift, as what appeared to be a shot for a point from Jamie King looped into the Joes net. Injury time points from a King free and one from play for Vinnie Corrigan meant that the teams went in level at the break.

Half Time Score: St Josephs 1-4, St Fechins 1-4

Corrigan started the second half even better than he finished the first, with two quick fire points putting his side back into a two point lead. The tables were turned again though when Shane Mc Quillan drove through the middle and goaled. A Gary Kinahan free, after Mickey Mc Ardle had been dragged down on the edge of the large parallelagram meant that it was the Joes who were in front after ten minutes of play. The game would go 17 minutes before the next score came and when it did it was a dramatic one. Vinnie Corrigan was dragged down in the penalty area and spot kick was dualy awarded. Jamie King stood forward to hit the pressure shot and smashed it off the crossbar, however, he followed it up and palmed to the net. The Joes rallied again and right on the stroke of thirty minutes David Kierans set up Gary Kinahan for the levelling score. The Joes pushed on again and hit the winner in injury time, when Conor Lynch set up Shane Mc Quillan.
