Two from Two for Junior Team in League

23 Apr 2013

Having faced the 2012 4B League winners last week, the Joes Juniors faced the 2012 4A Championship winners this week, as they themselves set out in the defence of their 4A League title! The game was played in Cluskey Park and the warm sunny evening provided perfect conditions for the match, with only a light breeze blowing into the road end that the Martins were playing into in the first half.

It did not take the visitors long to settle, with Rory Brodigan pointing from play within a minute. This however, would be the only time in the game that his side would lead. A couple of minutes later Lorcan Doyle pointed after playing a sylish interchange with David Reilly. And straight from the kickout good fielding from Cian Mc Guinness and a good ball in from Mickey Mc Ardle gave Doyle the chance to quickly double his tally. A free from Brodigan had the score level, but an Alan Quigley point, that came from a move that started with some excellent fielding from Jack Mulligan, restored the Joes lead in what was a very lively opening ten minutes.

Cathal Costelloe in the Martins goals had to be alert to pull off a good save from Lorcan Doyle and a Quigley free put the Joes lead out to two before Doyle made no mistake in hitting the net in a move straight from the kickout that involved Reilly, Quigley and Rory Campbell. It did not take the Monasterboice men long to cancel this out though, as an incissive move through the Joes defence saw Ciaran Byrne palm the ball to the net at the end of it. The Joes responded quickly with a Quigley free, before Padraig Mc Donagh put over a very ambitious effort at the far end from out near the end line. The final score of the half saw Quigley and Aidan Shaw combine to put Lorcan Doyle through for another goal and give the Joes a comfortable five point lead, which the Martins would not breach during the second half.

Half Time Score: St Josephs 2-5, Naomh Mairtin 1-3

Damien Connor struck over a point for the Joes straight from the throw in. This was followed by another goal chance for Ciaran Byrne at the far end, this time Eamonn Neary pulled off a good save to deny him. Alan Quigley was again on the scoresheet next, followed by a point from Martins substitute Martin Byrne. The next Joes score came from the boot of Mickey Mc Ardle after a lovely crossfield ball from Connor found him in space. A couple of points from Padraig Mc Donagh brought the Martins back to within five with 18 minutes played in the half, but there was an immediate response to the second these from the Joes tallisman, Lorcan Doyle. Points from Connor, Quigley and Shaw had the Joes leading by double scores with only two minutes of normal time remaining. Mc Donagh and Mulligan traded points in the closing minutes to see the Joes finish up as comfortable winners.
