Narrowest of Defeats to Roche in Sheelan Cup

16 Jun 2011

The Joes travelled to Roche on Thursday evening for the final round match of the Sheelan Cup. In what was a meaningless game in terms of the competition, Roche were looking to score their first win and in the process regain some pride after their heavy defeat when the two sides met in the league.

Kevin Callaghan opened the scoring with a free in the opening minute, with the Joes winning the kickout, good quick ball into Derek Mulligan laid the platform for Tomas Smyth to open the Joes account. A Conal O Hanlon free put the Joes into the lead for the first time, followed up by a well worked move that was finished with a stunning Anthony Keenan goal. Callaghan replied for Roche with the first of his six points from play, before further points from Peter and Derek Mulligan extended the Joes lead to five with a quarter of the game played. The Joes only other score for the remainder of the half would be another fine point from Peter Mulligan. While Roche went on to hit 1-5 and lead by two points at the break. Corner back Tom Quigley was the unlikely scorer of the first of these points and Barry O Hare hit two frees, but it was danger man Callaghan who lead the attack, hitting 1-2 from play in this period.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 1-5, Roche Emmets 1-7

The Joes were back on level terms within four minutes of the restart, thanks to Derek Mulligan, who hit two good points from the right corner, the second coming after good set up play from Conall Smyth. Roche would hit their second purple patch of the match at this stage, when they hit six unanswered points by the 19th minute. A good point from distance by Robbie O Hanlon started off this sequence, followed by Liam Mc Carthy hitting a dead ball over the bar from over 55 yards out. O Hanlon was on the score sheet again, before full forward Owen O Hare also got in on the scoring act. It was Kevin Callaghan who hit the last two points in this scoring sequence. However, it was the recently introduced substitute Lorcan Doyle who got the Joes back into the game with a well taken goal, which was quickly followed by a Conal O Hanlon point. Callaghan hit Roches last point in the 24th minute to ease their lead back out to three. The Joes pushed hard in the closing minutes to get something from the game and although a Pete Mulligan point from the right wing and a Conal O Hanlon free reduced the deficit to the minimum, the chance for the leveler didnt come and Roche held out for the narrowest of wins.
