Season Starts with Sheelan Success over Seans

20 Feb 2011

On a very cold and windy point road, the new season got off to a winning start with a win over the Sean O Mahonys, this Sunday morning.

Playing with the aid of the wind in the first half, the Joes got into their stride from the start and having won the throw in the ball was played straight to Alan Mc Kenna who stroked over the first score. The O Mahonys leveled things up a few minutes later with their first point from play. But when a long ball from Andrew Cluskey found Derek Mulligan inside, the nippy corner forward did well and bagged the opening goal of the game. This was followed up by further points from play from Brendan O Donoghue and Mulligan again, to stretch the lead to five with less than nine minutes played. However the Joes would go through the next 14 minutes without a score, while the men from the town benefitted from two well taken David Crawley frees in this period. The Joes got back into their stride when a move started by David Mernagh was finished by the hard working Mc Kenna, this was soon followed by another Mulligan point from play. The final kick of the half was another pointed free from Crawley to bring back the Joes half time lead to four points.
Half Time Score: Sean O Mahonys 0-4, St Josephs 1-5

Crawley was again on the scoresheet for the O Mahonys within the opening minute of the second half, this time from play. But the Joes didn’t take long to settle either, with three Conal O Hanlon points within the space of four minutes pushing out the lead. The first of these was from the free, with the other two from play and Derek Mulligan being involved in setting up all of them. Two quick fire points from play for O Mahonys midfielder Liam Dullaghan would bring them back to within four with more than a quarter of the game to play, but this would be as close as they would get to the Joes.

On the three quarter mark, a ball won back by Mark Dromgoole in defence, would start a very good move, that would be finished off with a fine Brendan O Donoghue point. And when a high looping shot from Mulligan dropped on the square and the keeper was unable to contain it, Cian Smyth was on hand to finish to the net. This score would effectively make the win secure. The scoring was rounded off with another fine Liam Dullaghan point from play, another Conal O Hanlon free and a final free from Crawley.
