Narrow Away defeat in Sheelan Cup

14 May 2010

The Seniors travelled to the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda on Friday evening for the resumption of the Sheelan Cup competition. With the pitch in great shape, a sunny evening and no breeze it was a perfect evening for football.

It was the home side who settled quickest, putting three early points from play on the board, before Ollie Mc Donnell levelled things up with a beautifully dinked goal. However, no sooner was the ball in the net, than the Joes lost Conor Murtagh to injury. A Peter Mulligan shot at goal was blocked out for a 50, from the resultant kick Derek Mulligan put the Joes in front with a point from play. They edged further in front when Ollie Mc Donnell played an interchange with Brendan O Donoghue, before fisting a point. The O Raghallaighs again clocked up three unanswered points from play to put them back in front. But a Derek Mulligan point from the right corner sent the teams in level at the short whistle.

Half Time Score: St Josephs 1-3, O Raghallaighs 0-6

The Drogheda men went on another scoring burst at the start of the second half, rattling off an unanswered 1-2 from play in the first 8 minutes of the half. Derek Mulligan was again on hand to put scores on the board, this time he was at the end of good ball in from Mark Gorham which Mully netted. The home side notched up two further points from play to leave the gap at four points with a quarter of the game left. A Peter Mulligan point and another from Derek Mulligan came either side of an O Raghallaighs point, to leave the margin at three with less than ten minutes to play.

There followed some frantic goal mouth action in the next few minutes, started off with a Derek Mulligan shot at goal being saved, the ball came down the field and the O Raghallaighs would surely have had a goal of their own, if the final pass had not been a throw ball. The Joes came straight downfield and Brendan O Donoghue rifled home a shot to square up the game. However, the remainder of the game was pretty much all played in the Joes half, with the Drogheda men missing a number of chances to win the game and seal victory. With 27 minutes played Philip Kinahan blocked down one of these chances, a shot on goal. However, the ball rebounded to another Raghallaighs player who calmly fisted over the winner.
