Match Report - Senior League Match with Clans

25 Apr 2010

In a weekend where not a single division one match was won by the home side, a full strength and fully fit Clans side came to Cluskey Park, hoping to get their league campaign off to a good start. Missing a number of players, the Joes put up what can only be described as a very disappointing display.

It was the Joes who did open the scoring, with a Conal O Hanlon point from play. But once the Clans got going after five minutes, with a Martin Mc Geown free, it was all them for the next ten minutes, racking up an impressive 2-4 without reply to put an ominous look on the game with three quarter of it left to be played. Drew Duffy scoring 1-1 of this tally, the goal coming at the third attempt. The other goal was palmed into the net by Declan Moran just four minutes after the first. It was again Conal O Hanlon who got the Joes second point, but from the kickout the Clans worked the ball downfield and cancelled this out with another Mc Geown freekick. Leo Martin and JJ Quigley added two more points from play to extend their lead out to eleven points with 20 minutes played. The recently introduced Daire Smyth became the second Joes man to get on the scoresheet a minute later, with a fine point, after good work from O Hanlon and David Reilly. The Clans tagged on three more from play before the break to leave them in a very commanding lead at half time.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-3, Clan na Gael 2-10

The Joes did open the scoring in the second half when substitute Brendan O Donoghue took a fine score with less than a minute played. This was followed up by a Derek Mulligan point from play. But it was the Clans who scored the most in this quarter, with four points, two of them Mc Geown frees. Going into the final quarter Conal O Hanlon made a goal chance for himself that was palmed out for a 50. However on the very next attack O Hanlon was back on the ball, this time laying off to Alan Mc Kenna who bagged a consolation goal for the home side. This was soon cancelled out with another Mc Geown point and Drew Duffys second goal. The Joes final score of the game came with 22 minutes played and was also probably their best move of the match. O Hanlon started the move with a clever ball into Derek Mulligan, who set up Brendan O Donoghue, who fisted goalwards, only to see his effort be palmed over the bar. The Clans tagged on another two frees in closing minutes as well as a skyscraper effort from play for Ray Mc Cabe, to give them a more than comprehensive victory.
