Match Report - Junior league game in Cooley

15 Apr 2010

The Joes travelled to Fr Mc Evoy Park this evening, never an easy place to go to. The task was made no easier by having to field an understrength team.

However, it was the Joes who opened the scoring, with a Gary Kinahan point, after patient build up play. But Cooley soon settled, kicking a few wides, before they found their range and kicked 1-2 from play without reply. Again the Joes were patient in their build up for their second score, this time it was Rory Campbell setting up Liam Mernagh, to leave a goal in it with ten minutes played. Cooley again pushed on, this time kicking three points from play, to give them a six point lead with 18 minutes played. The Joes were thrown a lifeline a minute later, Gerry Hoey played a ball into Rory Campbell, who was taken down and penalty award. Mark Gorham took the spot kick and calmly stroked it home. From here the Joes dominated the exchanges until the end of the half, but could not convert this into scores and with a minute left in the half, it was Cooley who tagged on a point from play to give them a four point lead at the break.

Half Time Score: Cooley Kickhams 1-6, St Josephs 1-2

Cooley opened the scoring in the second half with a very well taken free. In fact it was pretty much all Cooley in this half. They notched up another three points from play before Gary Kinahan was fouled in the 13th minute and Cian Smyth scored the resultant free to reduce the deficit to seven. This score was brief respite, as a minute later a long range free was not dealt with by the Joes defence on their goal line and ended up in the net! Gary Kinahan again drew another free, this time Gerry Hoey scoring well and Cian Smyth scored another free before the end. In between these, the home side got another point from play to leave the final margin of defeat being nine points.
