First Defeat of the Season

21 Mar 2010

The first defeat in the Sheelan cup came in a home game to the O Raghallaighs this morning. The Drogheda side, now managed by Colin Kelly, exacted some small level of revenge for their championship defeat last year to the Joes. The Joes continued with the policy of fielding a young team, with Mark Dromgoole and Anthony Keenan being the most experienced Joes players on the field throughout the sixty minutes.

The Joes had a bright opening half, when the same as last week, their first score came from Daire Smyth. In fact the half was bookended by brother Cian scoring the final Joes point of the half. In between the top scorers in the half were Conal O Hanlon, who racked up four points from frees and Peter Brennan who followed up a point from play with the only goal of the game.

Half Time Score: St Josephs 1-08, O Raghallaighs 0-10

The second half started brightly with John Murtagh driving forward from the throw in and setting up a fine point for Mark Neary. However, this would be his last act in the game as he was lost to injury shortly afterwards. The Drogheda side tagged on two points from play at this stage, before a fifth and final Conal O Hanlon point, from a free, restored the Joes lead. This would be the last time the Joes would lead, as from here to the end the Joes only score was a second Mark Neary point from play, while during the same period, the Raghallaighs scored five points (four of them from play) to secure the win.

Full Time Score: St Josephs 1-11, O Raghallaighs 0-17
