Season Off to a Winning Start

07 Mar 2010

The 2009 season started off with a tight league win in the Gaels field. This season saw a similar start, except this time it wasnt the first league game, but the first round of the Paddy Sheelan Cup. With an early morning start, the game was played in fine conditions and the Joes fielded a mainly U21 side.

Daire Smyth scored the first two Joes scores of the game, the first a point from play, followed by one from a free. This was followed up by a Pete Brennan point from a free, before Tommy Yore, playing in the unfamiliar role of corner forward, bagged a goal. Derek Mulligan finished off the Joes scoring for the half, to leave the Joes with a two point lead.
Half Time Score: Gaels 0-5, Joes 1-4

The second half saw the Joes only score three points, however the Gaels were not able to score enough themselves to swing the result. The first Joes score of the half again came from the boot of Daire Smyth. The last two scores for the Joes both came from Mark Neary, one from play and the second from a free. The Joes did have two goal chances in the closing stages, but were not successful with either.
Full Time Score: Gaels 0-9, Joes 1-7
